Face masks are beneficial because they protect both you and others, and they should be worn when you’re out and about.
They do, however, have drawbacks, such as being difficult to breathe in and, even worse, being hot and humid. Finding a breathable face mask, even after months of acclimating, is easier said than done.
What’s the most breathable face mask? According to the CDC, you should use masks made of breathable fabric. Use face masks made of fabric rather than leather or plastic, which do not filter the air properly. The Under Armour Sports Mask is rated to be the most breathable face mask.

Many brands have followed suit, repurposing performance fabrics from their specialized clothing to create sweat-wicking and UV-protective options. But the material that does the job is much more basic.
Because cotton is breathable, you can use any kind of it. While it is tempting to buy a mask to fit your leggings, natural fibers are preferable.
Nylon can be uncomfortable to wear in hot weather and may not offer as much ventilation as you would like.
Even better are face masks made from quilter yarn. When compared to plain old cotton, they have a decent 60 to 80 percent filtration rate.
Under Armour Sports Mask
The Under Armour Sports Mask is durable and comfy. It has long straps and plenty of coverage to protect your face while still allowing you to breathe normally.

Are Bandanas, Balaclavas, or Neck Gaiters Effective?
When it comes to design, neck gaiters, balaclavas, and bandanas are easier to pull up and down during exercise. But researchers at Duke University recently discovered that fleece neck gaiters were the least effective mask alternative.
The fleece material seemed to break down large droplets into smaller particles that are more easily absorbed. The study found that folded bandanas and neck gaiters don’t block respiratory droplets like three-layer surgical masks and cotton masks.
How Often Should You Wash Your Face Mask?
That depends entirely on how much you sweat, so treat it like you would the rest of your workout gear. Cotton has the advantage of being quick to wash, both by hand and in the machine
. You can quickly wash your face mask in the sink with warm water and soap. You can have only a few and batch them in a load if you have a dedicated laundry day.
What You Need to Know About Face Masks
It is important to keep track of your exercise intensity for a healthy and successful workout, face mask or none. Wearing a covering over the areas of the mouth and nose when exercising is likely to restrict oxygen flow through the lungs.
Some exercises, such as high-intensity interval training (HIIT), can feel a little more challenging. It is extremely demanding on the cardiorespiratory system. This may be due to a reduction in the amount of oxygen supplying the muscles.
As skeletal muscle receives less oxygen, it produces less ATP, which is required to sustain exercise strength and length. As a result, a slightly lower oxygen level hitting the muscle is a major cause of fatigue.
Some exercisers who wear face masks find that they are unable to complete an otherwise normal workout. Others say that they are more tired during and after the workout than usual.
- To ensure safety, make sure your mask is large enough to cover your nose and face.
- The mask should fit snugly around your cheeks and nose and feel relaxed. When working out, try not to fidget with the mask.
- It’s not a good idea to wear the mask during exercise if it prevents breathing before starting.
- Before wearing your mask, wash your face. You can clean your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water or with an alcohol-based hand rub.
- Avoid rubbing your nose, eyes, or mouth while changing or removing your mask. After removing your mask, please wash your hands.
- Because the front of the mask is where germs accumulate, it is safer to remove them by using the ear loops.
- The fact that a cloth mask can be washed is a huge plus. Daily exercisers should have a few masks on hand so that they can have a clean, dry mask anytime. For washing cloth face masks, any laundry detergent will suffice.
- Always wear your mask over your mouth and nose while speaking. Pulling it down defeats the purpose of preventing the release of respiratory droplets into the air.
- Bring a second mask with you if you sweat a lot when you exercise (indoors or outdoors) and swap it when it gets wet. A damp mask (from workout sweat or outdoor humidity) should be replaced as soon as possible.
- If too much air is released near the face mask’s nose; it may cause glasses to fog up. Reposition the mask so that it fits snugly over the nose.
Clean glasses with soapy water without rinsing and allow them to dry before wearing a face mask. Placing a folded tissue underneath your glasses can help absorb any escaping moisture from your breath.
- Find a cloth mask that suits a child’s face snugly yet comfortably. Follow all of the same safety precautions as adults. If your child is under two years of age, he/she should not wear a face mask.
Halt and take a break if you start to experience any of the following symptoms when exercising:
- Overall discomfort
- Significant shortness of breath
- Muscular weakness
Get medical attention if the situation gets worse.
If You Are Planning to Go to the Beach
Wearing the same sort of cotton mask that you would for any other activity is fine. If you’re going to be around water, your mask may get wet. If that happens, it will become less breathable and harbor more bacteria.
Wash and dry your face mask the same day. Always practice social distancing when in the bath for added security.
Scientific evidence suggests that wearing a mask and shielding your face is a great way to slow the virus’s spread. But, some individuals may find it difficult to exercise while wearing a mask.
